This semester
you will be working on a term paper that incorporates
research. For the purposes of this course, your paper should be a work
of literary interpretation or analysis.

The major objective of Writing 102 is to develop your ability to write papers
supported by research. Writing researched papers -- in any discipline --
requires several broad skills:

  • forming ideas about a subject through reading and
    investigating.

  • situating your ideas within the ongoing
"conversation" on the topic or issue.  LOCATING
    your views.

  • organization: forecasting your points.   In this essay, you
will need to learn to make a short list of types of evidence that
you will use to support your claim.  Then you will refer
to the forecast list in topic sentences in body of essay.   You
will see examples of forecasting and will discuss this
    online.

  • communicating your ideas effectively to others.
incorporating the findings of others in your paper
    with appropriate documentation.

All the researched papers you write, in any academic
discipline, will require you to apply these thinking, reading,
and writing skills. You will find that the broader skills you
develop as you write your paper for this class can be
transferred to research papers you write across disciplines.

For more information on writing research papers about
literature, read pages 465 -511 in the St. Martin's Guide.
