Readings
A Time
and Place in My Life
Getting Started:
Read these chapters:
(BR) Writing effectively, pp. 33-46.
(PEN) Coherent writing, pp. 48-51.
Concise writing, pp. 332-37.
Self-assess writing skills & interests (WebCT JOURNAL)
* Do not complete the
exercises listed in these chapters (unless you really want to).
Reading for Ideas:
Audience: To whom
is each of these writers writing? For example, H. G. Wells
wrote for a broad public who read 1890s "adventure" stories or, "scientific
romances" that would now be called science fiction, even though that term was not
invented until the 1920s. Think how audience makes writers use certain forms.
Published
authors: These are short pieces of fiction that use detail and
description very
well. Read the Holmes story for how Arthur Conan Doyle describes,
using details. Read the
Willa Cather My Antonia chapter for a sense of place and
scenic detail. Read the
H. G. Wells Time Machine excerpt for vivid future details.
What do you think of
Wells' method of getting away from his deprived youth?
Read about Wells' own childhood influences HERE:
Read all the links to
Wells'life, his works, Wells clubs around the world, and the
reviews critics gave (good and bad) to The Time Machine when it came out on
THE WELLS WEB:
Student writers: Read
this student essay for a sense of how to bring in detail.
